ABOUTin the bartimaeus sequence, there are seven planes of spiritual activity. these basically function as layers of supernatural vision that show invisible magic or an entity's "true" form. it's a vital skill as faquarl's universe is full of hidden magical activity, spirits, and shapeshifters hiding their true forms. for tl;dr,the first: what humans can see. this is the physical reality.
the second: this reveals lower-level magic and magical beings. for example, imps that are invisible to humans may become visible. "auras" (human and nonhuman alike) become detectable — weak or strong, multicolored, match current emotions, etc. recent magic use might leave visible traces.
three through six: beginning to ramp up in what supernatural entities or elements are revealed, here.
the seventh: where all is revealed!
eight and beyond: these planes are considered extraneous and excessive. they're reserved for entities that would be difficult or impossible for humans to summon. if your character is a god, for ex: the seventh plane alone might indicate some distortion, etc, that something is occurring on even higher planes.
OPT IN / OPT OUTanyway! if your character is magic, uses magic, or just magic-adjacent, feel free to fill out the below. if your character is Normal but you want to explain what their "aura" looks like, that's also welcome. you can get creative as you'd like - it's magic after all, lol.
- What "is" your character?: this is just for ooc context. i won't use this info unless it would be obvious to faquarl (ex: they're a human, he recognizes the signs of a succubus, it is apparent they're an imp or a lesser deity, etc).
- Can Faquarl detect anything supernatural? the opt-in/opt-out permissions part. yes, no, maybe.
- What is detectable?: whether they reek of some type of magic, whether their aura is enormous, whether they're deific, etc. he might see through a demon's disguise or that a human is suspiciously glittery - feel free to describe any hidden attributes of what your character looks, smells, sounds like etc, or anything else notable.
